I made some game design exercises today. I am reading the book “Game Design Workshop - Designing, Prototyping and Playtesting Games”, the best book I have read on the topic by far, recommended.
One of the exercises I did was an idea tree, where you draw five parallel lines with lots of space between, and write down a passion you have at the root of each line. Then you make two branches of each tree, and write ideas based on the root of that tree. You do it again for each branch etc. It makes you think outside the box and discover new things.
I also liked the idea of another brainstorming exercise, where you write down words you come up with on cards and mix in a bowl. Draw two or more cards and put the cards together to form an idea. Like ‘pony’ and ‘ninja’, maybe you can have a pony riding ninjas in your game?
